Theology in Action

April 01, 2025 - 2 minute read

Often, when people hear the word “theology,” images are conjured of professors in tweed jackets hovering over academic books in a poorly-lit room.

Yet, graduates of Concordia University Irvine know that theology is at its best when it applies the Word of God to ordinary life, especially as the Christian lives out his or her various vocations throughout the day, be it as a student, co-worker, friend, spouse, parent, adult child, sibling, etc.

As you delve into this issue of Concordia Magazine, you’ll be inspired by this profound and impactful theme, as we explore how theology is applied daily in our vocations, a concept deeply rooted in Concordia’s ethos.

In this issue, you will meet a few alumni who have seamlessly integrated their theological education with their vocational callings. Their stories beautifully illustrate a spirit of service, compassion, and faith in action.

The cover feature highlights the inspiring work of a Lutheran pastor and alumnus who serves as a military chaplain. His story is a testament to the power of faith in providing strength and solace in the most challenging of circumstances. As he ministers to those who serve our country selflessly, he embodies the values of our university, demonstrating how theological training equips individuals to serve with empathy, resilience, unwavering faith, and relentless hope.

Another key article explores the question of why we require our nursing students, whose curriculum is already demanding, to take courses in theology and bioethics. We live in a world in which medical professionals often face complex ethical dilemmas. By integrating theology into their education, we ensure that our graduates are not only skilled practitioners but also empathetic caregivers who approach their profession with a holistic understanding of human dignity, as we confess that each patient is made in the image and likeness of God.

Additionally, we celebrate the achievements of our first three PhD graduates in the Townsend Institute’s counseling program. Their work highlights the unique contribution that a faith-based education can make in the field of mental health, emphasizing the importance of holistic care that nurtures both the mind and the spirit.

As you reflect on these stories, we hope and pray that you are reminded of the transformative power of a Concordia education. Concordia’s carefully curated educational experience is designed to foster a deep understanding of theology and an awareness of all a student’s various vocations. This coupling of theological study with practical application across various vocational fields sets a Concordia University Irvine education apart. It is our mission to prepare graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also compassionate, ethical, and equipped as “wise, honorable, and cultivated citizens to serve society and the church.”

We invite you to stay connected with us and to share your own stories of where theology meets application in your day-to-day vocations. And it is our hope and prayer that you continue to support our university’s mission. Together, we can celebrate and further the legacy of integrating faith and service in all our vocations.

For His Students,

Michael A. Thomas, PhD
