Regardless of your major, through the mission studies minor, you will begin to develop foundational skills, knowledge, and attitudes to faithfully and fruitfully carry out God's Mission wherever he places you in life.

Through select courses, you will delve into the rich theological and biblical foundations of missions, gain valuable sociological and anthropological insights that shape meaningful cross-cultural engagement, and acquire hands-on experience through guided Mission Learning Experiences (MiLEs), where you'll gradually take on more responsibility during mission trips that bring classroom lessons to life.

  • ANT 210: Cultural Anthropology

Understanding diverse cultures of the world, from preliterate societies to modern technological societies, is the focus of this course, and will include mankind's universal as well as adaptive dimensions; and the examination of socioeconomic, political, religious, and physical environmental factors that relate to the values and lifestyles of various peoples.

  • ANT 241: Anthropology Field Methods for Travelers

Practical application of anthropological concepts designed to assist in analyzing, understanding, and living within other cultural traditions is the focus of this course and will include topics such as the role of culture, living with culture shock, strategies for analyzing cultures, processes of assimilation, language issues, cultural food ways, manners, and social expectations.

  • SOC 321: Social Problems

As an introduction to the major problems in contemporary America, this course will focus on the causes, theoretical explanations, and social policy solutions including economic, political, urbanization, environmental, family and educational problems; child abuse; social deviance; crime; delinquency; and drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse.

  • THL 222: Christian Witness and Evangelism

This course will introduce students to the theology and practice of Christian evangelism through the development of the skills needed to share the Gospel with others within a North American context.

  • THL 402: Ministry in Cultural Context

This course will investigate the nature of Cultural Intelligence (CQ), and its application for ministry, which will include the students' own understanding of their CQ competency as they engage with culturally diverse environments. Furthermore, the student will also develop an understanding of what it means to engage in theological contextualization and apply that understanding within their own cross-cultural setting.

  • THL 391: Practicum: Mission Learning Experience I

A practical, hands-on experience outside the classroom that complements and enhances the student's academic learning in the mission studies minor. Students will participate in a mission learning experience and will be introduced to the foundational knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for effective mission practice. Offered as a Pass/No Pass course.

  • THL 392: Practicum: Mission Learning Experience II
  • 1

This course is a practical, hands-on experience outside the classroom that complements and enhances the student's academic learning in the mission studies minor. Students will engage with others cross-culturally in a mission learning experience and will grow in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes as effective mission practitioners. Offered as a Pass/No Pass course. Prerequisite: THL 391.

  • THL 393: Practicum: Mission Learning Experience III
  • 1

This course is a practical, hands-on experience outside the classroom that complements and enhances the student's academic learning in the mission studies minor. Students will lead certain aspects of a mission learning experience and will grow in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes as effective mission leaders. Offered as a Pass/No Pass course. Prerequisite: THL 392.

  • THL 481: The Mission of Christ's Church
  • 3

This course will provide an overview of the theology and practice of Christian missions including the historical development, missionary methods, evangelism programs, and paradigm shifts, to develop the skills needed to share the Gospel with others.
