Let Us Go

Advent 2024

Late at night in fields around Bethlehem, shepherds watched over their flocks, protecting their sheep. It was just another ordinary night. One more cold, lonely, boring night. That changed in an instant. The shepherds were startled as the Lord’s glory shone around them and an angel appeared, bearing an unexpected message: A Savior is born. He is the Messiah.

With no further warning, their eyes were opened to see an army of angels that sang God’s praises.

Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!

Just as fast, the moment passed. The angels were gone. The glory no longer visible. Darkness wrapped the fields once more. Surely the shepherds questioned, “What just happened?” “Did I really just see that?” “How is it that this message came to us and not to the priests or the king?” “Can it really be true?” Whatever thoughts ran through their heads, one thing was perfectly clear: they could not simply resume their tedious watch.

Let’s go! Let us see this thing the angels have told us. Let’s go to Bethlehem.

Having been awed by the glory, I’m not surprised that they followed the angel’s invitation. But I wonder if anyone paused to think for a minute. Did any of the shepherds wonder if they should stay behind? “You go. I’ll stay with the sheep.” Maybe a pragmatic worker suggested a delay. “Let’s wait until morning. It will be safer for us, and they might be sleeping. We’ll be able to see better then.”

Scripture doesn’t hint at any doubting responses like these, but it’s easy to imagine, isn’t it? Doesn’t it ring true to the human experience? “It will wait until tomorrow.” “I have other things today.” “Maybe later.” We all make excuses like that at times.

I have not seen the heavens ripped open like this. I haven’t seen the angel army or heard their song with my own ears. But I have certainly heard the Lord’s invitation.

A Savior has come for you. He is Christ, the Lord. Come and see.

He still comes to us and invites us into his presence. A Savior has come for you. He is Christ the Lord.

Don’t put it off. Don’t wait until tomorrow. God is here for you today. Come and see!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we need you. Thank you for coming for us. Draw us to you and be with us today and always. Amen.
