What Do You See?

Advent 2024

We know what the shepherds saw in Bethlehem. What about you? What do you see at the manger?

Is it a romanticized, clean, beautiful scene? Do you envision a perfect panorama of people, rested and comfortable, bathed in warmth and light? Do you see a baby radiantly glowing, his hand raised in blessing? Or do you see what was likely more accurate: a cold, drafty stable. A family dirty and weary from travel. A woman spent from labor. A newborn in pitiable conditions. Still, it doesn’t take much imagination to envision the faces of Mary and Joseph, along with anyone else who came to the manger. Who doesn’t find their attention captivated and their hearts melted by a precious infant?

For some then, and today, that’s where their viewing stops. But look closer and see the miracle in the manger. See the Word made flesh. The One by whom the universe was made, the only-begotten Son of God who was always with the Father now shares our nature, bears our body, experiences our life.

Look closely and see. Here begins the fulfillment of the greatest divine promise. He comes as one of us to redeem each of us and the whole world. God is with us, and he will never leave.

Look in this humble place where no rational person would ever choose to deliver a baby. It looks like a hopeless place of desolation, but here, lying on hay, is the world’s true hope. Nothing is beyond his reach.

Look on this new life and rejoice, but marvel at the truth that was foretold. This one has not come to lead a pampered life of luxury and ease. Though he is the true King of all, he will use his authority to lay down his life. To suffer and die. To rescue and save. And then to rise and conquer sin, death, and all who oppose God and his people. Here is love, life, and hope.

Now look around you. What do you see? Who do you see? Where is God calling you to go? Who is he calling you to bless? Where is there a need that you can fill or a life you can touch? Where can you bring joy? Where can you go with Jesus?

He is calling you.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, you are my life and my hope. Give me your vision to see how I can be a blessing. In your name. Amen.
